Read moreWhat do the P1 P2 P3 classes mean for protective half masks?
Half masks are used to protect against dispersed small solid particles such as dusts, fumes, and mists (they do not protect against gases). Protective half masks made of nonwoven fabric are divided into three filtration efficiency classes: P1 – retain about 80% of particles smaller than 2 micrometers P2 – retain about 94% of particles smaller than 0.5 micrometers P3 – retain about 99.95% of particles smaller than 0.5 micrometers Protective half masks of classes P1, P2, P3 are tested in accordance with the requirements of standard PN-EN 149:2001. Filtration class Maximum permissible concentration of contaminants (NDS) Filtration efficiency Type of aerosol Intended use P1 4 x NDS 80% dust, fume, mist agricultural and food industry, use in construction, quarries, cement plants, wood industry during processing of softwood; protects against dusts: calcium carbonate, natural and synthetic graphite, gypsum, chalk, cement, plaster, marble, zinc oxide, plant pollens, cellulose, sulfur, cotton, ferrous metal filings, coal dust containing less than 10% free silica P2 10 x NDS 94% dust, fume, mist P1 + dusts of asbestos, copper, barium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, hard wood dust, coal dust containing free silica above 10%, mining, chemical and metallurgical industries (version with an exhalation valve), during processing of hardwood P3 30 x NDS 97% dust, fume, mist P1 + P2 + high concentrations of respirable dusts, protects during welding and soldering, protects against dusts containing: beryllium, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, radium, strychnine, radioactive particles Worth knowing Half masks cause an increase in inhalation resistance. The longer they are used, the more the accumulated dust makes breathing more difficult. Moreover, their effectiveness decreases as the concentration of carbon dioxide and water vapor between the facepiece of the half mask and the face (the so-called dead space) increases. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the dead space increases with each exhalation. Therefore masks should be replaced frequently. To improve user comfort, one-way exhalation valves are used, which accelerate gas circulation. When considering the purchase of a dust mask, it is worth choosing those equipped with this type of feature. For the mask's effectiveness and user comfort, proper fit of the mask is important. Leakage around the edge of the half mask results in an increase of the so-called total inward leakage and consequently a loss of effective filtration efficiency. Loss of seal can be caused, for example, by the user's facial hair.Author: Grzegorz Nowak
Read moreImpact driver. Get to know it better
Impact drivers are specialized power tools intended primarily for construction and workshop work. However, they are also gaining popularity among DIY enthusiasts. What tasks can impact drivers be used for? And how do you find the optimal model that will meet the requirements placed on it? You will find out by reading the guide below. What is an impact driver and how does it work? The main tasks an electric impact driver is meant to perform are driving and removing nuts, bolts and screws. It is especially helpful when removing seized screws and bolts. Compared to an impact wrench, which serves a similar function, impact drivers are considerably smaller and lighter. Especially the very portable cordless impact driver, which is useful both for field work and around your own property. An impact driver is also suitable for drilling holes in soft materials such as wood or metal. It is not recommended for materials like concrete or bricks. It is also necessary to purchase special hexagonal drill bits that will fit the chuck. Where does the secret of this device lie? Impact driver: basic information and principle of operation What distinguishes an impact driver from other power tools? It is the automatically engaging rotational impact that activates when the tool encounters resistance during work. In that case the spindle drive switches from continuous to intermittent, making it easier to tighten a screw or loosen a seized bolt. So what is the difference between an impact driver and an impact wrench? Aside from the aforementioned difference in size, the two power tools have completely different torque levels. While impact wrenches often deliver torque above 1000 Nm, impact drivers typically do not exceed 250 Nm. This is both a drawback and an advantage. With lower torque an impact driver may not handle heavily seized fastening bolts. On the other hand, using a very powerful wrench makes it easier to strip threads or damage soft materials (such as some types of wood). Therefore the choice of impact driver or impact wrench largely depends on the types of tasks most often performed. An important difference is also the size of the drive. Impact wrenches may use typical ½ inch, as well as ¾, ⅝ or inch drives. Impact drivers, however, are equipped with a ¼ inch hex drive. In drill-drivers, which are also used to loosen screws, a keyless chuck is used. In this comparison it is also worth noting the mechanism of action. A drill-driver reaches high speed, while the more complex system in an impact driver — resembling a hammer striking an anvil — allows generation of several times greater torque. Brushless impact driver. A modern solution for professionals If most of the work takes place where there is easy access to mains power, a corded impact driver is a good idea. However, assembly work is much more often carried out in the field where sockets are not available. That is why cordless models are far more popular. Alongside cheaper models with brushed electric motors, you can also find new-generation devices equipped with brushless motors. What is the difference between them? The latter solution can deliver up to 25% more power. In addition, a brushless impact driver is characterized by greater durability during the heaviest tasks. Increased reliability means the devices require less frequent maintenance or servicing. Therefore, despite the higher price, brushless impact drivers are chosen by professionals. Practical uses of an impact driver Although they used to be power tools chosen only by professionals, today an impact driver. The applications of these devices are very broad in home settings: from disassembling and assembling various devices during repairs, through assembling wooden structures, to small car jobs. To make these tasks easier, it is worth equipping yourself with a good set of screwdriver bits (HEX ¼ inch). With the right accessories the tool becomes very versatile, and its advantage over standard drill-drivers is access to the impact function. That is why more and more people choose an impact driver for their garage. What else can it be used for? Impact drivers in industry and construction In industry a 230 V impact driver or pneumatic models perform better. Constant access to mains power, and often to compressed air systems, allows the device to be used freely at a given workstation. It is different in construction, because most work is carried out in the field. That is why professionals in this sector use impact drivers. In professional use the durability of the device and accessories becomes very important. For this reason professionals choose more expensive models. This also applies to accessories. Sockets for impact drivers are subjected to heavy loads during work because of the impact. Therefore it is worth opting for impact screwdriver bits, which are flexible enough to partially absorb the torque, increasing their service life. Impact driver in the garage: a useful tool for mechanics Mechanics in automotive workshops also use the discussed tool. A impact driver is useful for assembling and disassembling various components in a vehicle. Its lower torque helps avoid accidentally stripping threads on smaller screws. Another advantage of the impact driver is a much higher torque at dimensions and weight similar to an impact wrench. That is why an impact wrench will work better for changing car wheels, whereas an impact driver – for motorcycle wheels Impact drivers for assemblers Because of their high torque, low weight and ease of use, impact drivers are used just as often by assemblers. Important in this context is torque adjustment, allowing screws to be tightened according to the specifications of the mounted equipment. Additionally, a cordless impact driver will perform well in difficult conditions such as narrow spaces or lack of access to mains power. Choosing impact drivers: what to pay attention to? Impact drivers work great for professional mechanics, builders or carpenters, as well as in the home workshop. However, in each case a different model of the device will provide the best results. So which impact driver will be the optimal choice for you? What should you pay attention to? Power source. Pneumatic and corded impact drivers are mainly found in workshops and production halls. In the field cordless models perform better. Type of motor. In electric models it is better to choose brushless impact drivers, which offer greater reliability and durability. Torque. This defines the force with which the device rotates the spindle and thus the attached bit. It is measured in Nm (newton-meters). This is the most important parameter for impact drivers. For home DIY enthusiasts an 18 V cordless impact driver with 200 Nm torque will be an optimal choice. Build quality and the materials used in production. A metal housing (instead of plastic), or a larger amount of copper in the winding, makes the motor less prone to failure . Size and weight of the device, which translate into its power. These should be matched to the tasks that will be performed using the impact driver. Features. Speed control, LED lighting, etc., make work easier and increase its efficiency. Accessories. Appropriate drill bits or screwdriver bits allow you to complete any task. It is also worth equipping yourself with an adapter for impact drivers, which will enable the use of bits of various sizes (½, ¼ and ⅜ inch). There are many important parameters. However, two of them are particularly significant: torque and speed control. Therefore it is worth discussing them in more detail.Author: Paweł Sokołowski

Personal protective equipment (PPE) protects a worker against a specific hazard or multiple hazards that may affect their safety and health. Products that are personal protective equipment placed on the EU market must have EC declarations of conformity in accordance with Directive 89/686/EEC. PPE is divided into three groups. The classification criterion is the degree of risk against which they are intended to protect the user. Category I: products of simple design, used in low-risk conditions. The user is able to assess the effectiveness of the PPE themselves. Category II: products protecting against hazards that may cause injury. The risk of injury is defined as "not very low and not very high". Category III: products of complex design, protecting in situations of serious or permanent risk that may affect the user's life and health. Category Risk User Hazards Examples of personal protective equipment I low can assess the effectiveness of the protection themselves mechanical factors whose effects are superficial gardening gloves cleaning agents with weak and easily reversible effects detergent-resistant gloves handling hot objects at a temperature not exceeding 50°C aprons atmospheric elements head coverings minor impacts and vibrations whose effects cannot cause irreversible bodily harm light helmets sunlight sunglasses II medium not specified not classified in categories I and III personal protective equipment that does not belong to risk category I or III (e.g., high-visibility clothing and clothing for welders, protective helmets) III high cannot determine quickly enough how effective the protection is solid or liquid aerosols or gases that are irritating, hazardous, toxic or radioactive respiratory protective equipment (e.g., masks) chemical or ionizing radiation suits, e.g., gas-tight suits high temperatures exceeding 100°C, conditions where infrared radiation, flames or exposure to large splashes of molten metal may occur fire-resistant clothing low air temperature -50°C or below thermal clothing fall from height climbing accessories electric shock and work with high-voltage electricity electrically insulating helmets Author: Grzegorz Nowak
